Aerial photo of Clonmacnoise monastic settlement in Romanesque style.

Clonmacnoise was founded by Saint Ciaran in the 6th century becoming a
major centre for trade, religion and learning. The early structures were built of
wood until the 10th century when stone construction was used. This aerial
view shows proximity to the river Shannon in County Offaly.
