Aerial
photo of volcanic ash layer from 4000 ft. Our position was overhead Anascaul on the Dingle peninsula looking NNW to Brandon village at 2.50 pm, 9 May 2010.
The pilot said he'd never seen this before. We dropped down to 2000 ft but the layer was no longer visible from the lower altitude. On landing, there was a light but definite fine covering of white/pinkish dust on the plane's struts.
Another possibility for this dark layer could be smoke from forest fires in county Clare
the previous day.
